How does Undrdog Compare to X?

We get a lot of calls from detailers and car owners wanting to compare Undrdog to other companies. Normally, we take a neutral approach to answer these questions because we don’t ever want to bash or talk poorly about another company. Honestly, there are good qualities about every company out there, and depending on who you ask, you could get a variety of answers. 

What we will do is offer some answers about who we are and what we do, explain some of the things that we do know about many of the companies you ask us to compare ourselves to, and leave it to you to research and decide what the differences are.

Undrdog has its roots as a family-owned, American-based company, with its owners having decades of experience in the automotive detailing industry. Undrdog was founded with a goal to change the ceramic coating game, and today, I think it is fair to say that we have.

What we did was revolutionize the way that ceramic coatings were advertised, explained, and sold. Traditionally, ceramic coatings have been gimmicky, oversold in terms of value and performance, overpriced, and always had a gatekeeper to keep the cost of the coating product high and give it an extreme appearance of superiority and exclusivity.

Advertising ceramic coatings has always been a bit of a funky matter in both the eyes of the detailer and the smart, aware car owner. We have seen it all, from lighting cars on fire, to buildings burning and a spotless car arising from the ashes, or banging shopping carts into car doors claiming a ceramic coating is going to somehow prevent that from happening.

Which it doesn’t!

It doesn’t prevent it from happening and it doesn’t make any of those events even remotely less impactful or damaging to your vehicle’s paint, plastics, or glass. It’s not just one company that does this. They all kind of do. Everyone is just following everyone else’s success regardless if it’s right or wrong. When one company jumps, they all do. Like graphene - one day one company has it, tomorrow the next does. That’s life.

These sensationalized marketing tactics have created a cloud of misinformation around what ceramic coatings can and cannot do. As a result, many consumers have unrealistic expectations about the capabilities of these products. At Undrdog, we aim to cut through the noise and provide clear, honest information. At the start of the industry, just like one might expect, there was a low annual life expectancy. Then the next company came and had to one-up, and the next and the next, until we landed on lifetime durability and warranty.

Right... Doesn’t sound proper to me either. How can anything last that long? And guess what? It’s been two decades of ceramic coatings development, and to this day, we have not - repeat, have not - experienced a ceramic coating to last even a decade from any company on the market that we are aware of. The truth is people just don’t take care of their ten-year-old car as well as they did when it was only one year old. And sometimes they don’t even care for the new car well.

Let’s get to the warranty part.

We have already established they don’t last as long as many companies claim. The warranties generally state that they cover a wide array of potential damages that could happen to the ceramic coating. But all of them have little asterisks directly underneath that talk about aftercare. And they are very strict with the rules about aftercare/annual check regimens and how that applies to your warranty being valid. 

As we said earlier, most people don’t take care of their cars as well as they should. We, as product companies, know this without question. We see this as a form of consumer predation. Companies are preying on your want to feel assured that there’s a good chance that you’re going to mess up somewhere along the lines and void your warranty.

This cycle of exaggerated claims and restrictive warranties creates a misleading perception of what ceramic coatings can achieve. Think about it: you’re a detailer, you’re using wax, that’s all you’ve ever known. You get a call from a company that tells you it has this new elixir called a ceramic coating. It’s gonna last a decade but it costs 15 times more per container to complete one car than you’re used to paying to do 15 cars. You’re immediately thinking to yourself, this sounds nuts, but then the company tells you, oh, this is exclusive and you get a territory and this is going to separate you from your competitors, and only you are going to be able to buy it. Nobody else, none of the 350 million people that live in this country. 

Makes you feel honored when you think about it. So you kinda catch my drift… it was certainly an effective method that companies deployed to add inflated value to a bottle of liquid the size of a nail polish bottle. It’s my opinion this inserted a lot of ego and entitlement into a very healthy industry. We think this method created a culture that holds detailers and car owners back from what they really want.

This exclusivity tactic not only inflated prices but also created a sense of elitism within the industry. Detailers felt privileged to offer a product that was marketed as superior and rare, while car owners believed they were getting something truly special. 

In reality, this was a clever marketing ploy to justify exorbitant prices and foster dependency on specific brands. At Undrdog, we rejected this model from the outset. We believe that quality products should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford to pay a premium for a name. We already know that ceramics don’t last as long as they claim. Just to reinforce that one more time: if you’re a detailer reading this, how many of you hear from the coating supplier that you’re buying a 10-year product but then you turn around and advertise it as a five or an eight-year product? You don’t even have confidence in saying what they say. 

A lot of ceramic coating companies will give you a long list of values such as coating hardness and performances like protection against water spots, etching, UV rays, oxidation, corrosion, etc., and allegedly it’s supposed to do this the entire length of their claimed durability rating. And when it doesn’t, you just spray on another product so that it does last that “ten years” or a “lifetime.” 

Or they go another route and tell you that either you or the detailer did it wrong. That always goes over so well. We are here to tell you that all products on the market will water-spot, they will etch from bird poop, they will scratch, and they will get dirty. Anyone that says otherwise is being highly unrealistic and/or referring to a show car that never gets driven and sits in some multimillionaire’s air-conditioned collection warehouse where you don’t get any real-world wear and tear results.
